The Federal Government of Nigeria is considering a further hike in electricity tariffs for customers outside the top service tier to reduce a three trillion naira power sector subsidy and address a four trillion naira debt owed to generation companies. While unveiling new data-driven energy policy frameworks in Abuja, the Minister of Power argued that the adjustments are necessary to improve sector liquidity and revamp dilapidated infrastructure. However, small business owners, civil society organisations, and activist groups have vehemently rejected the proposed hike, warning that it will trigger crippling inflation, force businesses to close, and be met with fierce mass resistance from citizens who are already struggling with poor service delivery and frequent national grid collapses.
