Recently, the National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi accompanied by the Director of Public Services Department (PSD), Mr. Kehinde Ojo and the Special Assistant on Professional Matters, Mr. Baba Mohammed, to the Signing of Letter of Intent to Cooperate on American Spaces Programming. This brief but significant ceremony took place at the United States Embassy in Abuja, where the National Librarian/CEO signed the agreement on behalf of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN), and Ms. Victoria Cook, the Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer, signed for the US Embassy.
In her remarks, Ms. Cook expressed satisfaction with the established and positive relationship between the NLN and the Embassy. She expressed optimism that the NLN would fully utilize the opportunities presented by the Windows on America.
Responding, the National Librarian/CEO assured the Embassy that the American Space would be put to maximum use, benefiting library users and the wider community. Prof. Anunobi also emphasized the library's openness to exploring many more partnership opportunities with the US Embassy.
It is important to recall that the US Embassy had graciously agreed to establish a "Windows on America" at the Katsina State branch of the NLN. This development followed strong advocacy and persistent efforts by the National Librarian/CEO, highlighting commitment to expanding access to information and fostering cultural exchange. The formal opening ceremony for the Katsina American Space was held on Wednesday, April 8th, 2025, in Katsina.
Windows on America are resource centers established by the U.S. Department of State in partnership with local institutions like Libraries and Universities. They serve as hubs for information about the United States, offering a range of resources and programs, including but not limited to access to information, cultural programs, workshops, lectures, and film screenings. This initiative will not only benefit the National Library of Nigeria but also the general public in Katsina State, especially the youth, who stand to gain significantly from this cooperation on American Spaces Programming. This aligns with the National Library of Nigeria Strategy 2025-2030, particularly goals 1, 2, and 3 of Objective 3, as well as goal 2 of Objective 4, which are primarily centered on lifelong learning and international collaborations.
