BRIEF PROFILE OF PROFESSOR LENRIE O. AINA
Lenrie Olatokunbo Aina is Professor of Library and Information Science at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria and he was serving as a visiting Professor at the Africa Regional Centre for Information Science, University of Ibadan, from where he was appointed the National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria.
He received B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry from the University of Lagos in 1974, and an M.Phil. Information Science from City University, London in 1980. He obtained his PhD in Library Studies from the University of Ibadan in 1986. Professor Aina is Fellow of the Nigeria Library Association (FNLA).
Professor Aina has taught library and information science courses in various universities in Africa (University of Ibadan, 1978-1989; University of Botswana, 1989-2007; Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria 2008; and the University of Ilorin (2008-present).
Professor Aina was a practising librarian at the University of Ibadan Library, 1976-1978.
Professor Aina was the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin (2009-2013), President of the Nigerian Library Association, 2010-2012, and Member of the Governing Board of the National Library of Nigeria (2010-2011).
Professor Aina has served as external examiner in over 30 African universities. He has served on the Accreditation Panel of National Universities Commission (NUC) to different universities in Nigeria.Professor L. O. Aina is the Pioneer Editor-in -Chief of the African Journal of Library, Archives and Information Science, the only library and information science journal in Africa covered by the World acclaimed Web of Science.
His research interests span through all areas of library and information science. This speaks of his versatility and grip of his chosen profession. He has given numerous invited talks and tutorials at national and international levels and he is a consultant to institutions and companies of which technical reports submitted have greatly impacted and improved services they render.
Professor Aina has authored co-authored (10) books on library and information science, which are adjudged as invaluable information materials for students and library educators all over the world. One of such books is entitled "Library and Information Science Text for Africa (2004), which is used by library and information science schools throughout Africa.
He is also an expert in curriculum development in librarianship and information science. Between 1982 -2016 he has been involved in designing of curricula for universities. Some of such efforts are: Involvement in the design of Master of Information Science Programme at University of Ibadan (1983-1885), involvement in the design of Master and Doctorate Degrees in Library and Information Programme at the University of Botswana (1993-1997), served as a resource person in the development of curriculum of diploma, bachelor and Postgraduate Diploma programmes in library studies at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa (1995) and involvement in the design of master's and doctoral programmes in Information Technology in Federal University of Technology, Minna in 2008 and the design of Bachelors of Library and Information Science; Master of Library and Information Science; and Doctoral degree programe in of Library and Information Science; at the University of Ilorin (2008 to 2013). Professor Aina currently supervises eight doctoral students at the University of Ilorin and eleven Masters students at Africa Regional Centre for Information Science, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
Prof. Aina has published 60 journal articles and attended over 66 conferences, seminars and workshops in 27 countries (Botswana, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Italy, Lesotho, Luxembourg, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, UK, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe).
Professor Aina is a member of seventeen (17) professional associations.
His passion and desire for the Nation, Nigeria is to see that library services flourish to meet the needs of both young and old and that the citizenry imbibe good reading culture. He also wishes that emerging technologies which make access to information are deployed, embraced and utilized by libraries to enhance service delivery.
