The National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. L.O. Aina on Friday 3rd February, 2017 handed over site for the construction of an e-library, a constituency zonal intervention project at Ebunwana community in Afikpo South LGA, Ebonyi State. The project which was championed by one of the illustrious sons of the community, distinguished Senator, Sonni Ogbuji of the Ebonyi South Senatorial District is to be constructed by Messer’s CIJ Works Ltd.
The National Librarian who was represented by the Deputy Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Henry Majinsonstated that National Library, been a national heritage, is usually delighted whenever an opportunity is presented for the organization to expand its mandate as enshrined in the decree setting up the National Library of Nigeria. The project when completed will no doubt provide employment for the youths of the community, enhance access to information and as well be an open gate for them to enjoy the numerous services of National Library which includes issuance of ISBN/ISSN, legal deposit services etc.
He extolled the Senator for his magnanimity and wise decision in choosing to bequeath his community with a fountain of information and knowledge-based project which will be of immense benefit to every member of the constituency irrespective of social strata. He however, advised the community to give the Senator an unwavering support not just by words of mouth but by owning the project as their own, to guide, guard and protect both materials and human resources.
National Librarian further charged the Contractor-Messer’s CIJ Works Limited to work assiduously for timely completion of the project so as to enable the beneficiaries enjoy the dividends of democracy provided by their own son, and as well prove himself worthy and capable of the award.
Speaking at the event, the distinguished Senator, represented by Barrister Ifeanyi Ogba stated that he was very delighted to be part of such project which would widen the scope of knowledge for his people among other benefits. He urged NLN to ensure that fundswere released to the Contractor for timely completion of the project. He thanked National Library team and assured that the community members are friendly and would cooperate accordingly.
In a goodwill message, the Chairman of Ebunwana Welfare Union, Dr. Nnachi said the community appreciated the effort of their son, Senator Sonni Ogbuoji for having the interest of his people at heart. According to him, the project would offer jobs and take youths away from crime and would equally be accessible to Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Uwana which is very close to the community. He pledged commitment on behalf of the community and hoped that the contractor would be empowered to enable him execute the job in due course.
In a closing remark, the Head, Physical Planning Unit, Mr. Wilson Odumbaku assured the community that National Library as the funding agent had no reason to withhold any fund released for the project. He advised the community being the host agent to ensure security of life and property. To the Senator, he encouraged him to hasten the release of funds, so that sooner or later both parties would assemble for commissioning of the project. The Managing Director of CIJ Work Ltd., Mr. Isaac J. Chima pledged commitment and prompt delivery.
