The National Library of Nigeria on Thursday 23rd February 2017 donated 159 titles and sets of computers to the University of Jos, in the University’s Council Chamber in Jos, Plateau State.
The donations were made by the National Librarian, Prof. Lenrie Olatokunbo Aina, who paid a visit to the management of the University, to commiserate with them over the inferno that swept the University’s Library in 2016.
Presenting the books and computers to the University’s Vice-Chancellor, the National Librarian expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the University over the colossal loss of library collections that were consumed by the inferno. According to him, ‘I was deeply saddened and troubled when I heard of the unfortunate fire incident. Your university library ranks among the top five university libraries in our country. I felt a sense of personal loss as yours is a model university library that other universities need to copy. So I am here today with my colleagues from the National Library of Nigeria to lend you our little support of encouragement and materials in your quest to rebuild the library. I also do promise that the National Library would continue to render support to your university library, from time to time. The materials donated to the University Library included books, desktop and laptop computers.
Receiving the donations and responding on behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Seddi S. Maimako expressed appreciation to the National Librarian for the visit saying that ‘our consolation comes from solidarity visits of good spirited organisations and persons like you, who continue to lend us their support as we rebuild the university library.’
The National Librarian also used the occasion to further seek the Vice Chancellor’s support in urging lecturers and researchers in the university to always endeavour to deposit copies of their publications with the National Library, in compliance with the Legal Deposit requirement of the land as well as acquisition of International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) and International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for all of their publications. He was later taken round the burnt library to sight the carnage that befell the university.
The National Librarian was accompanied by the Director in charge of Collections Development and Processing Mrs. Binta F. Shuaibu as well as other senior officers of the organisation.
